1. My favorite quote: "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." - Anais Nin
2. Perhaps the best use i've found for courage is in dealing with my "shadow elements" - those buried fears and traumas that jump up and cause me to react in ways that i don't like. There is a wonderful practice of taking those incidents and consciously tracking them to their source. In fact, whenever something bothers me, i've found it helpful to pay attention and trace it to its origins.
Shadow elements are experiences we've pushed into our unconscious at some stressful time in our lives. They are sources of energy and it takes energy to hold them below our consciousness. When they get triggered, they can cause havoc in our lives. But when they are faced, which requres courage, they always come with gifts for us. I'm indebted to Carl Jung and Debbie Ford - and to my 12-step program - for this knowledge and experience.
